In 2007, Steve and Kate created the Ukalaliens Songbook for Absolute Beginner Adults to teach basics. It turned those with zero skills into proficient ukulele plays in a matter of one hour. All over Portland, people learned how to play uke with folk songs and a fun, almost instant method. Inspired by the joy that learning the uke sparked in hundreds of adults, Kate and Steve got the idea to go national!
They hopped into their tour bus with their Ukalaliens Songbook and 30 Kala ukuleles-to-lend and with an expressed mission to teach all they would meet to learn how to play the ukulele if they wanted to. Over the years, small groups in libraries became thousands of new uke players around the country as uke players reproduced at a rapid rate. Steve and Kate inspired a movement that brought the joy of making music to the curious to try their hand - often for the first time - and experience the gift of music making firsthand.

A MESSAGE FROM KATE POWER & STEVE EINHORN:
Hello fellow music lovers and curious souls alike! Today, we want to sit down with you, grab a cup of tea or a mug of your favorite brew, and talk about the joyful world of learning to play an instrument, particularly the darling of the strings – the ukulele.
Now, you might be thinking, "Isn't learning an instrument just for the youngins?" Oh, but let us assure you, my friend, that couldn't be farther from the truth. In fact, there's something downright magical about picking up the ukulele as an adult. So, let's dive into why strumming those tiny strings can bring such joy and goodness into your life:
A Melodic Escape: Life can sometimes feel like a whirlwind of responsibilities and worries. But when you pluck those ukulele strings, it's like embarking on a musical journey to a tranquil island getaway. The soothing melodies transport you to a place of serenity, even if just for a moment, allowing you to escape the chaos of the everyday.
Mindful Music Making: There's a certain mindfulness that comes with playing an instrument, especially one as gentle and inviting as the ukulele. As you focus on hitting the right chords and keeping rhythm, the worries of the day melt away, replaced by a sense of calm and clarity. It's a form of meditation in motion, grounding you in the present moment and nurturing your mental well-being.
Community Connection: One of the beautiful things about music is its ability to bring people together. Whether you join a ukulele club, attend jam sessions, or simply strum along with friends and family, playing the ukulele fosters a sense of community and camaraderie. Sharing songs and laughter creates bonds that uplift the spirit and remind us of the joy found in human connection.
Boosted Brainpower: Believe it or not, learning to play an instrument isn't just good for the soul – it's good for the brain too! Studies have shown that playing music can improve cognitive function, sharpen memory, and enhance overall brain health. So, by picking up the ukulele, you're not only filling your heart with song but also giving your mind a delightful workout.
Creative Expression: In a world that often feels dominated by routine and conformity, playing the ukulele offers a refreshing outlet for creative expression. Whether you're strumming out your own compositions or putting your unique spin on beloved classics, the ukulele empowers you to unleash your inner artist and share your voice with the world.
So, dear reader, if you've ever felt the faint stirrings of curiosity about learning to play an instrument, we wholeheartedly encourage you to give the ukulele a try. Let its sweet melodies serenade your spirit, its gentle strings guide your fingers, and its infectious joy light up your life.
Who knows? You might just discover a newfound passion that brings harmony to your days and a song to your heart. Happy strumming! 🎶✨
